Our Palm

The palm frond carried great significance in the ancient world. When a king or war hero was welcomed home, palm branches were laid out, creating a path for him to enter the city. In Roman times, crowds waving palm branches honored champions and military elite. King Solomon had palm branches carved into the doors and walls of the temple.

The Gospel of John tells us that crowds gathered and laid palm branches before Jesus, expressing their excitement as the long-awaited Messiah entered Jerusalem. Revelation states that people from every nation will raise palm branches to honor Jesus as the triumphal King who is victorious over sin. (Revelation 7:9).

The palm branch represents a twofold significance for this body, as a physical symbol of our location on Skidaway Island, but even greater, it serves as a reminder of our purpose. We desire to be a people who are preparing the way for the King. We exist to exalt Christ and to make him known in our community and the world.

What We Believe

We believe in fulfilling the Great Commission as commanded in Matthew 28:19-20, which calls us to “go and make disciples of all nations.” This is the foundation of our missions ministry and our outreach efforts, both locally and globally.

We affirm the 2000 Baptist Faith and Message, a statement that outlines our core beliefs regarding foundational Christian truths like the authority of the Bible, the nature of God, and the way of salvation through Jesus Christ. To read this complete confession of our faith and understand our theological commitments in detail, we invite you to review the full document.

The Bible

We believe the Bible is the complete Word of God. The sixty-six books of the Old and New Testaments, as originally written, were verbally inspired by the Holy Spirit and entirely without error. The Bible is our final authority in all matters of faith and practice, and the true foundation for Christian unity.

God

We believe in one God, the holy, sovereign, and eternal Creator of all, who exists in three equal Persons: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.

Jesus

We believe in the absolute and essential deity of Jesus Christ. He existed eternally with the Father in pre-incarnate glory, was born of a virgin, lived a sinless life, died a substitutionary death, rose bodily from the dead, ascended triumphantly into heaven, continues His mediatorial ministry, and will personally return.

Holy Spirit

We believe in the absolute and essential deity and personhood of the Holy Spirit, who convicts the world of sin, righteousness, and judgment; and who regenerates, sanctifies, illuminates, and comforts all who believe in Jesus Christ.

Human Beings

We believe that humanity was divinely created in the image of God, but through sin became guilty before Him, resulting in total depravity and incurring both physical and spiritual death.

Salvation

We believe that salvation is the result of God’s sovereign, electing grace. By the Father’s appointment, Christ willingly suffered a vicarious, expiatory, and propitiatory death. Justification comes by faith alone in the all-sufficient sacrifice and resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ. All whom God has effectually called will be divinely preserved and ultimately perfected in His image.

Last Things

We believe in the personal, bodily, and glorious return of Jesus Christ; the bodily resurrection of both the righteous and the wicked; the eternal joy of the redeemed; and the conscious, eternal punishment of the wicked.

The Local Church

We believe the church is a community of baptized believers, called out from the world and set apart for Jesus. They voluntarily join together to preach the Word, build each other up, spread the faith, and observe the ordinances. The church is a sovereign, independent body, operating under Christ’s authority as its Head, exercising the gifts and privileges He has given.

Ordinances

We believe the New Testament teaches two ordinances for the church:
Baptism—the immersion of a believer in water, obeying Christ’s command and symbolizing identification with His death, burial, and resurrection.
The Lord’s Supper—a memorial where believers partake of bread and wine, symbolizing Christ’s body and blood, proclaiming His death until He returns.

Elders/Deacons

We believe the New Testament teaches two offices in the church:
Elders (also called pastors or bishops), who are men given the responsibility to oversee, shepherd, and lead the congregation;
and deacons/deaconesses, who serve the church’s practical and administrative needs, allowing elders to focus on their leadership responsibilities.

Marriage

Marriage is a lifelong covenant between one man and one woman. It shows the relationship between Christ and the church and provides a framework for companionship, biblical sexual expression, and having children.

Elders

God has entrusted the leadership of the local church to a plurality of men the Scriptures refer to as elders/overseers/pastors (1 Timothy 3:1-7, Titus 1:5-9)  These elders are called to meet the biblical qualifications laid out in Scripture, and are responsible to know, feed, lead, and protect the church. The elder team at SIBC is made up of both staff and lay elders.
